New transport solution for 2 MW nacelles

The engineers at Nooteboom Special Products have found a solution for loading/unloading the extremely heavy generators of large wind turbines without any need for a mobile crane. The first 3 systems have been delivered to the specialised windmill transport company Frank Norager from FJERRITSLEV, Denmark.

One of the largest producers of wind turbines in the world, the Danish company Vestas, improved their internal logistics around the 2 MW nacelles. On so-called ‘base frames’ a generator - in the business called a ‘nacelle’ – makes its way through the production process to subsequently be transported on this ‘base frame’ as the finished product. Just like the Mega Windmill Transporter developed by Nooteboom for the 3 MW nacelle, there is no need for a mobile crane to load/unload the 2 MW nacelle.

Around eight years ago Nooteboom developed an earlier solution for the transport of 2 MW nacelles. They used load floor adaptors and a load floor that can be coupled to them. Because Vestas wanted to reduce the costs of their internal logistics, they developed this “base frame”. Subsequently Vestas asked Nooteboom to develop the best transport solution for it.
Based on the Vestas ‘base frame’, Nooteboom Special Products has developed this solution, which makes it possible to load/unload the 2 MW nacelle without a mobile crane. By integrating the flexibility in the coupling of the load floor, loading/unloading becomes possible even on wind turbine locations where there is very little room to manoeuvre.
